2016 Chase Season Recap
The 2016 storm chase season has begun across the Plains. The season kicked off on 15 April in the Texas Panhandle, where a supercell formed near Amarillo, Texas then went on to produce several tornadoes in the Oklahoma Panhandle near Texhoma, Oklahoma.

After a bit of a bust in north central Kansas on 26 April the opportunities to get out dried up until the week of 21 May to 25 May.
The week started off strongly on 21 May with a strong supercell that produced multiple tornadoes near Leoti, Kansas. While the tornadoes were fascinating the star of the show was the structure that the stationary supercell showed off just north of Leoti.

After a couple days of some tactical and forecast errors on 22 May and 23 May, I resolved to have better chases on the following days. Despite the busts on those two days, I was still able to get some decent post-storm photography in the Texas Panhandle.

On 24 May after spending the entire day in a field near Cimarron, Kansas I chased a storm that produced several tornadoes between Minneola, Kansas and Jetmore, Kansas. This storm produced a tornado that went through the far west side of Dodge City, causing some damage to structures on the outskirts of town.

The next day, 25 May, was supposed to be a down day. With a 'Marginal Risk' out for severe weather in Kansas the original plan was to rest for the next day's active weather. But after a late afternoon tornado watch was issued, and considering the extreme instability in the area we held out in Hutchinson, Kansas for the day. Around sunset a strong supercell formed north of Salina, and ultimately produced a violent tornado that tracked 26 miles toward Chapman, Kansas, where it impacted some structures on the southwest side of town. The tornado dissipated shortly thereafter east of Chapman.

The final chase of the season took place in a long range target that brough me to north central Illinois on 22 June. The storm mode was messy, but I was still able to pull out a couple tornadoes west of Chicago along Interstate 80.

This will likely draw a close to the 2016 storm chase season.
